Helping People and Animals in Haiti

The destruction caused by the earthquake in Haiti on January 12 is shocking.   All of us at Pets Lifeline are keeping the people touched by this tragedy in our hearts and minds as are so many in our community.

For those of you wondering what you can do to help the animals of Haiti in their time of need there is an Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) which includes the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the World Society for the Protection of Animals, American Humane, Best Friends, The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International.

According to ARCH organizations, there are an estimated 5 million head of livestock in the country (mostly goats), a large stray dog population, and an untold number of companion animals and native wildlife all adversely affected by the earthquake. There are, however, no organized animal welfare groups in Haiti.  A team of experts in animal emergency response is staging in the Dominican Republic waiting to get into Haiti. That team will work to assess animal-care needs in the country.  Clearly there are serious security, transportation, housing and supply challenges at this time. A mobile clinic is being stocked with vaccines, antibiotics, bandages, food and other supplies in anticipation of bringing direct aid to animals.  The focus of the efforts will primarily be on livestock to best support egg and goat milk production.  Caring for the hens and goats will, in turn, help address the human need that is so great at this time.   The International Fund for Animal Welfare and the World Society for the Protection of Animals are taking donations in support of their efforts via their web sites .

Pets Lifeline will continue to monitor the work of these established agencies and if we find there is a need for specific support we will let our amazing Sonoma Valley community know how they can help.
